Final day - WMC IFMA World Muaythai Championships

Day 9 - December 5th Finals

December 5th was the final day and the biggest day of the whole competition. The finals were held outside the beautiful setting of Wat Phra Kaew and the Grand Palace, and four hours before the fights started, the stadium was packed to bursting point with over 100,000 spectators, which was the biggest crowd ever at any amateur Muaythai event in the world.

Fighters were blown away by the atmosphere of the stadium, and this atmosphere will never be forgotten by any of the fighters or spectators. To make the event even more memorable, many sporting VIPs from around the world gave IFMA the honour of their attendance. There were so many that we can only mention a few, including the representatives from the IOC, Hein Verbruggen, the President of GAISF, Dr Wu, the world President of Amateur Boxing  (AIBA),  and every IOC and GAISF recognised martial art sent representatives, including the World Federations for Karate, Ju Jitsu, Kickboxing, Judo, Taekwando, Wrestling and Kendo, who came to honour IFMA and more importantly His Majesty the King of Thailand’s birthday celebrations.

The event was televised live all over Asia and this was the day that Muaythai showed that it is part of the Olympic mainstream.

The fights were truly world class, with the first one being Ukraine vs Russia in the 45kg division, Ukraine taking a very close decision. The second fight was female 48kg, and history was made as Korea won their first ever gold medal, showing that Korea is on track. 51kg division male saw Thailand and Russia battling it out, and with the support of 100,000 or more spectators, Thailand brought the gold home. The crowd got even bigger for the next fight, and at 60kg Thailand fought Ukraine with the stadium roaring, Thailand winning gold.

In the 60kg female bout between Thailand and Russia, nothing could stop Thailand, as before the backdrop of the palace and in honour of His Majesty, Thailand was on fire, winning the gold medal.

At 63.5kg it was Thailand vs Ukraine and again that was a world class performance by both fighters, but Thailand could not be beaten on the day.

75kg saw Russia vs Belarus, with no doubt with two of the best boys in the ring, Russia winning gold, then in the main fight of the afternoon program Australia faced off against Ukraine at 86kg in what was one of the closest fights of the day, with both fighters really giving it their all, Ukraine winning a narrow decision.

The candle ceremony for His Majesty the King had all boxers, officials and spectators joined together in an unforgettable moment, proudly closing the IFMA Championships, with memories not to be forgotten by anyone.
