Narai Bun Sien ( Kick to the Neck)

This is a useful MuayThai move, can be used often and to great effect.

Narai Bun Sien, "bun" means to cut , "sien" means the neck and altogether it means to cut the neck with the shin functioning as a very large, sharp knife ! A very powerful weapon , it is however not easy to carry out.

This kick is a long-range weapon, it is difficult to attain the same power from a close-range. The emphasis is on turning the body so as to kick as high as possible. This can be done from a standing position by completing rotating the hips and swinging the shin in a strong upwards arc. Try to connect with the shin , not the foot as this carries more power.

Another option , is to jump first to gain height and kick upwards as you do so.

How to defend against this:

  - Use the forward push-kick – either against the body or the supporting leg, to throw the attacker off-balance.

  - Lower the head slightly, with the arm protecting you and kick the supporting leg from underneath the attacker.

  - Sway back slightly so the kick misses its target and then counter-attack.

This kick should be practiced often - on the pads with your trainer for timing and alone on the sandbag for strength.
